Cameras - Design Layer Fine Tune vs Sheet Layer Viewport Fine Tune

Kevin McAllister

Question

I'm noticing a difference in what I see when I use Fine Tune Camera View in the Design Layers and then convert the Camera to a Sheet Layer Viewport. Here are some screen shots.

First using Fine Tune Camera View in the Design Layers -

And the Sheet Layer Viewport the Camera creates -

And finally using Fine Tune Camera View while editing the Camera associated with the Viewport -

Obviously my VW application window is a little different proportions than the camera, but it should at least match the viewport it creates in one direction. Instead it seems to crop in both directions, especially when translating from the Design Layer view to the Sheet Layer Viewport. It always feels like I'm guessing when setting a camera view. We really need a frame mask when editing Cameras like C4D has.

Do others struggle with this issue?

Kevin

My only solution to Vectorworks' poorly-implemented cameras and crop situation is:

  • When modeling: work in uncropped perspective.
  • When setting up camera views and making viewports: work in cropped perspective.

And I switch back and forth quickly with the help of Pat's script here:

I've found that the camera view is better represented on a Design Layer when working in cropped perspective.
