Vectorworks 2019

Recommended Posts

The below list is a summary of new features for 2019 that did not have their own videos. If you would like any additional information on any given item, I’ll be pleased to provide it in the thread below.

Subdivision 4.0

Creased edges, vertices and holed faces can now be highlighted for easier identification. Levels of Iteration can now be adjusted by the user, locking it to a “polygonal” low iteration always-creased appearance, as well as allowing highly detailed meshes for final presentations. This iteration setting is non-destructive.

Flyover Sensitivity

The flyover tool now has a mode bar preference that allows you to control the intensity at which the tool responds to mouse movement.

Installer Consolidation

There is now a single downloadable installer for B, E, C and G series serial numbers.

Cursor Position Highlight

The rules will now show a highlight color on the markers for the cursors current position for better visibility on high resolution displays. The color of this UI element can be altered in Interactive Appearance Settings.

PDF Annotations and Fill Styles

Users now have an option to display the annotations of an imported PDF. This can be toggled on and off at will, similar to PDf snapping. The default settings for both Snapping and Annotations can be set during PDF import. The Fill of PDFs can now be edited manually. It is now possible to resize multiple selected PDF pages.

Migration Manager Improvements

Users can now more granularly control the Preferences and settings that are migrated from one version to another.

Message Center Icon

The Message Center icon has been relocated to the top right to increase visibility and discoverability.

Object Info Palette Performance (Windows)

The Windows version of the Object Info Palette has been rebuilt, it should now be significantly faster and more responsive. Tabbing through the OIP should now work as expected. The alignment of OIP fields has also been cleaned up for easier readability.

Marquee Deletion of Mesh Faces

Users can now use marquee selection to delete faces while editing Mesh objects.

Nearby Snap Hint

Users will now see a small alert that other snap points are very close to the obtained snap point, and allow them to better resolve the obtained point by zooming in or using the snap loupe.  The user will get the desired point, the first time, and avoid inaccuracy in their drawings.

Second Leaf Options and Louver Doors

The Door tool has been upgraded to allow for full customization of the second leaf when using an unequal leaf configuration. The options previously added to the Window tool for Louvers have also been brought into the Door object as well.

Drop Shadow and Opacity Removed from Wall/Slab/Roof Styles

We have removed Drop Shadows as a Style parameter for Walls, Slabs and Roofs, since it is very often inappropriate to control the drop shadow by style rather than per-object.

Hide Roof Boundary

The Roof Boundary line will no longer appear in Plan view unless the roof object is selected.

Line Type Reengineering

Line Types have been rebuilt internally to properly behave, especially in scenarios where a line type resource is being referenced. This may have some other side speed and quality benefits as well.

BIM Workspace

We have added a new BIM-focused workspace for Architects.

New Document Templates

The default templates have been upgraded to include more common settings and preferences. Notably, Save Viewport Cache is now on by default for new files. This will not affect your existing templates in any way.

Title Block Border Enhancements

Conversion of older pre 2018 title blocks now provides more options, including the ability to only upgrade selected borders. The Title Block Manager dialog will be redesigned and improved to work with several files. It will work with active file, all opened files and external files from selected folder. The files can be standard Vectorworks files as well as working files. The menu command opens up the Title Block Manager dialog directly, letting the user made edits immediately.

Dimension Editing Improvements

It is now possible to add multiple dimensions to existing dimensions or chain dimensions continuously. It is also now possible to split a chain dimension by deleting a dimension (not a witness line) and have the chain split into two separate chains separated by that dimensions distance. Deleting the witness line should create two chain dimensions with no gap.

Spotlight Staging Tools and Commands in 3D

The following menu commands will be enabled and updated to work in 3D views.  There will be no UI change or changes to the workflow to the commands:

  • Convert to Instrument
  • Convert to MultiCircuit
  • Convert to Accessory
  • Assign Legend to Instruments
  • Create Hoist Symbol Key
  • Set Hoist Number and Dimension Display
  • Assign Origin to Selected Hoist
  • Set Selected High Hook Height
  • Set Individual High Hook Heights
  • Set Selected Load Trims
  • Make Jumper Cable Chain
  • Make Data Cable Chain
  • Assign Multicable Circuits

Heat Map Truss Workload

This task will give the ability to show a gradient workload heat map for the trusses calculated by Braceworks. This heat map display will give users a clearer visual representation as to the stress issues a truss could have.

Lighting Instrument Improvements

We included a new insertion mode allowing the automatic setting of the “Z” height according to objects in the document. Additionally, we’ve added a tab-in floating data bar, which will allow the tool to set information for the next lighting instrument to be inserted.

3D Label Legend 2.0

This feature gives users the ability to adjust the 3D layout of a Label Legend. We have integrated the resource selector into the Edit label legend dialog box, and allow for more control of labels More options in the direction label legends are facing, i.e. Iso views and Screen Plan views.

Web View Improvements

This task adds features that users have been requesting since Web View’s inception. Users can now view models with the HTC Vive, Google Daydream, and Oculus Rift devices. Userscan use the Interactive Clip Cube to clip their models, as well as to modify the shadows within Web View using a directional light. With these new additions, it will be easier to communicate designs via the Web View viewer.

Marionette Improvements
A parameter has been added to the OIP to control whether to reset a Marionette object (2D/3D) after each move, or only when a parameter is changed. Marionette objects now display an outline when it is moved in Top/Plan view, the same as other Vectorworks objects. New 2D and 3D Control Points nodes that add a control point to the Marionette object. Descriptions of nodes can now be seen in the Resource Manager. Added a button to the OIP to allow configuration of the Objects by Criteria node via the standard Criteria dialog. This is easier than typing the criteria in a single edit box. Added a new Context menu option - Rename Marionette Object, allowing the user to change the name of the Marionette Object. Added links to Marionette Tool Preferences – Marionette Gallery, Discussion, Training and a link to Computerworks Marionette page

New Marionette Nodes

A plethora of nodes have been added by the ever-clever @Marissa Farrell, a full list of which can be found HERE.

Also, I would very much like to draw everyone's attention to Data Tag. This one almost made the teaser list, it is intended an eventual replacement for a HUGE number of things in Vectorworks currently. Not the least of which is the long beloved Number Stamp tool:

^ This means door tagging freedom, no? I get rid of my 2-miles-long door tags!

In general, the "quality improvement" approach of the 2019 release is most welcome, well done and thanks!

Could you describe this more? Not sure I understand.

Previously when you marquee-ed over a mesh object, it would either select the whole mesh or nothing at all, even when editing the mesh itself.  in 2019, when editing a mesh (common when looking at imported 3D scan data especially) you can now marquee select and remove just certain portions of that mesh, very helpful when cleaning up messy imports. You can also marquee select across multiple meshes all at once, and then with those vertices highlighted, pressing delete will remove JUST those vertices, not the whole mesh as it used to.

Thats the idea! Existing door tags from previous versions have been left in place and in tact however, so as not to violently alter users workflows on day 1.

Sorry Jim. Don’t understand. What are the 2nd and 3rd modes?

Got my eyes crossed on two topics at once, my fault. As far as I know that bugfix was only for that dialog.

Will any of the bugs listed as fixed also be fixed in a final SP for 2018?

Yes, but I will not know which ones until 2018 Sp5 is finalized. It is VERY likely SP5 will not be released until we can include Mojave compatibility.

OIP rebuild for windows sounds awesome - probably my single biggest windows issue/gripe... does this mean it stops flashing as it updates? Add multiple dims to existing, autoturn integration - totally awesome. As well as all the other stuff 😁 Just need that callout tool tweaked 😉

At risk of sounding unduly negative... I think the applause needs to wait until people have used it for a bit in the wild.

Ofcourse, but since they implemented the majority of my (Spotlight) wishes. Some enthusiasm is in place imo😀

It should indeed, apparently a lot of the flashing was the OIP reloading each and every field value of the object it was reading from as a single thread function. It now should not only reread only when needed, but also do so faster.

Yep - its easy to slip into a negative frame of mind when the issues and small workflow things start to to become big things (crashing though is always a big thing...), but the takeaway from all the updates since I've been a user is that there seems to be a genuine drive to listen to users, incorporate wishes as well as improve the status quo in the day to day performance and existing tools. You only have to look at Revit updates and the stuff that users have been asking for years.. which is usually answered by a "buy our other productthats not in your overpriced bloated bundle!' answer (looking at you Autocad Civil3d for Revit site modelling) with the abhorrent pricing structure and bundling of useless software.

The variety of updates is fantastic and heartening to a large degree - but the proof is in the pudding when it comes to stability in use for sure.

Can you confirm if changes made for Space styles allow the setting of display units in tags associated with a space?

So file can remain in millimetres but room dimensions in metres with rounding.
