ERik Smith
How do I select objects and make them one group? Thanks Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
Holding down the Shift key while you click on objects will either add or remove them from the current selection. Once you have the objects you want selected, Modify menu, Group will make a group out of them. You can edit the objects in the group by using Modify:Edit Group to enter the group. There is an option in the Preference to show objects that are not in the group to to hide objects that are not in the group. Click the Exit Group button at the top right of the window to get back to the drawing. If you have an object you need to add into a group, you can CUT the object from the layer, EDIT the group and then PASTE IN PLACE to get it into the group in the same relative location. 1 Quote Link to comment
Andrew Davies
Great answer Pat - Also worth learning shortcut keys. In this case, the standard ones are CTRL / Command G to group, CTRL / Command U to un-group and double click a group to edit. 1 Quote Link to comment
hollister design Studio
@Pat Stanford Hey Pat, while in Group Edit mode can I select an object and "remove from group" or do I use the 'cut' and 'paste in place' trick for this too? Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
Cut and Paste in Place is the best way to get an object out of a group. How would VW know where you want to object to go (if say the object is in a group, in a group, in a group, in a viewport annotation) unless you go to that point and Paste in Place? ;-) Quote Link to comment
TomKen
You can also select your group and the object you want to add to the group, then group them again. After that if you want you can enter to the top level group and ungroup the one below (if you want). 1 Quote Link to comment

I often group objects so that I can send them all to the back or to the front so the sit in front or behind everything else. e.g. I sometimes use 2d polys with fills to show floor finishes. I will group all the polys and send them to the back. Quote Link to comment
Tom W.
That's a really good point. I'd kind of got used to re-Group sending the objects to the front then having to send them back again, but can see now the advantage of the Cut, Paste In Place method! Quote Link to comment
Heberling
Does anyone know if you can link groups? Say that I have a group with a few objects and I copy that group a bunch of times, apply rotation etc. Can I arrange it so that if I modify one group, they all change? Quote Link to comment
Boh
You can do exactly what you describe with symbols but not with groups. You can turn a group into a symbol via the create symbol command on the model menu. 1 Quote Link to comment
zoomer
And, in any case, you can replace any selected Objects by a Symbol. Just that it will place the Symbols with their insertion point, only at the geometric center of the former objects. Which may need a small location change of the Symbols position after conversion. But still very handy if you get files/imports in, where no Symbols/Blocks/Cells where used before when creating. 1 Quote Link to comment
