Question

Is it possible to finish wall openings properly by making  the external render and internal plaster wrap around the reveals into the window or door frame? Also can insulated  cavity closers be shown?

It is possible using the interior and exterior wall detail component settings for windows and doors, they display in 2D but not in 3D. Just set the number of wall compnents to wrap in the Window or Door settings Interior Wall Detail or Exterior Wall Detail panes. If you select the window or door, you will then get control points to adjust the pisition of the compents returned into the frame.

No, still not possible. You can disguise the fact that it doesn't work depending on your render mode. If you any render mode other than Open GL the caps wont be visible. Essentially, if you want complete control over the walls you will have to not use walls and use solids.
