Problems editing text blocks

line-weight

Question

Having some frustrations with VW2018 (SP4) where it becomes difficult to edit large-ish blocks of text - the text-edit cursor refuses to place the cursor within the text, only at the end, which means that wherever there's a large block of text, to edit something near the beginning of it I have to navigate the cursor all the way up from the bottom using the arrow keys.

It also means it's not possible to highlight sections of text to copy/delete.

This seems to happen about 75% of the time, sometimes it works ok.

Is this a known issue?

No, you're not! I thought we were the only ones. We see this almost always. For us the cursor refuses to move until one fiddles with the alignment settings once, eg. changing the alignment to right and then back to left. After this operation the cursor can be walked to the correct location. It almost never goes to the clicked position directly. This is a small but really annoying issue.

I think 2017 was ok regarding this.

Is this issue solved, because i'm having the same issue here.
As I duoble click a text block, the whole text block disappears. While i'm in the block. I cannot see what i'm doing, but I am editing when I type.
Restarting VW rebooting machine does not help at all.

Seems like it's a bug then.

Using v2018 on Mac - I've never had this issue that you experienced in 2018 and you say still persists.

I don't often run text boxes with 'pages' of text - I issue design notes etc via Word or Pages (Mac) would that be a factor with your problems?

The other way I produce larger text boxes is to quickly jump into a word processor and compile (I find the context and spelling corrections much more powerful/reliable than VW). Then copy all and paste onto the design/sheet layer etc. Even once pasted to a large text box, I can click reliably on single words and the curser lands correctly - perhaps not if the text block is far off though (which seems a reasonable result).

For me, single click - curser between letters, double click - word highlighted, triple click - line highlighted, hold and drag through a large section to copy/paste alternative or delete. Would there be a connection to the way you have your keyboards and/or mouse set for input? So not directly a VW issue?

Finally - are your text boxes on the same layer or on different layers with show/snap/modify in use? Could be a reason for slow response?

Very odd - both the fact that this happens for you and indirectly that no one else seems to have the issue and has chimed in here apart from @line-weight (probably rushing to get pdfs issued on long day 🙂 )

Not sure if any of that might help - all the best.

For me they are nearly always on a sheet layer - either directly on the sheet layer itself, or within the annotations space of a viewport.

Hi

I found out that the problem is having empty line at the end of a text.

If you delete the empty line(s), most of the problems are gone, like:
- Moving the cursor with the arrow-keys

- Cursor-positioning-behavior with the mouse

If you have trouble to move the cursor (at the end of a text with emtpy lines)

upwards, use the left-arrow-key one time.

This bug is still present until the latest version of VW 2024.

I made a bug-report about that, some time ago.

Greetings from Germany

Tobi

Ah yes, I remember this as a potential solution now.

Eg mentioned here

Oh - that's new.

Mmmm......just tried that and can't find fault.

Hey @Gadzooks,

in the German version I use, the problems

are gone if I had no empty lines at the end.

Maybe this behavior could be different to your VW 2018.

Greetings

Tobi
