Site Model: Proposed + Existing Contours

Message added by PVA - Admin

VB-152588 - Fix has been identified, but the issue is extensive. Expected fix version 2019 SP2. This message will be updated if this changes.

I am facing this same issue in VW 2024. It is a bit weird though, because it is happening only in one project file. For the other projects, the proposed contours shows only where there is a grade change. But for this specific project, the proposed contours shows on top of all existing contours and it gets hard to read. I checked the Site Model settings and compared each item with site models from other projects and everything is exactly the same. Can anyone help me find what is the problem with this site model?

If I select all the stakes from the "recreate from source data" and paste into a blank file and create a new site model from it, even with no site modifiers, the proposed contours appear exactly the same as the existing (with no modifiers, should be no proposed contours at all). So I guess that there is something wrong with the configuration of the stake objects I am using for this Site Model. Can anyone help me with that? File attached.

What is the issue?  Everything seems to be working correctly to me.

When I open your site model, I see this:

If I add grade limits, I see this:

What you show is exactly what I want to see, but for me it shows like this (Nothing for the proposed grades - no blue lines):

If I switch to proposed only, all lines become blue, not only where it changed:

In the real project, the proposed line (which is continuous), shows on top of the existing line (which is dashed), and at end, everything seems to be proposed contour:

(there is no regrading in this area for the image above)

The issue is....

You haven't set any grade limits!  If you look at your site model in 3D, you would see that the walkway and stairs have effectively become retaining pads because that's how the program works now.  You have to set grade limits if you want the program to grade the site.

Hello Jeff and Jonathan, Thank you for the feedback and all the help! But I am still struggling...

I had one grade limit on the Property line, and I thought that maybe if instead of that I create smaller grade limits I would get the result I am looking for, but no luck. I am attaching a new file, this time with more hardscapes and site modifiers. The site model was working fine after I placed the hardscapes and and the grade limits, but the proposed contours lines went all the way and crossed the grade limits after I paste the site modifiers in the file. Maybe I am creating the site modifiers in the wrong way?

There are many problems in your file.  It would probably help if you had a sketch depicting your desired outcome.

You would likely benefit from some custom training on site modeling and grading using this site as the subject area of such training.

@Jeff Prince is a great trainer if you need help.  He has helped several people at my firm become more comfortable with how to develop site models correctly.  It seems there is no mystery he can’t solve when it comes to Vectorworks.

Thanks for the endorsement, it helps having good students 🙂.

My secret to solving mysteries is pretty simple, I go through all the pieces of a site model very carefully.  The majority of the time,  people are using too much data to make the model (contours with too many points instead of using source points).  If not that, it's a bad piece of data or lack of parameters that messes up a site.  I think it is pretty rare for Vectorworks to be at fault when it comes to site model drama (if you ignore contour labels ).
