Andrew Davies
Hi I'm keen to boost the performance of my 2016 MBP - so wondering if anyone had tried an eGPU with Vectorworks? I think eGPU support is out of Beta now with High Sierra? Andrew 2 Quote Link to comment
mmoore5
Hi Andrew, Have you had any traction on this subject or explored it any further yourself. I am also curious if a eGPU would help. Quote Link to comment
Andrew Davies
Hi I did buy an eGPU box a couple of months ago - but I couldn’t get it to work with my LG 5K monitor. But I have just bought the Blackmagic eGPU which does work with Thunderbolt 3 monitors - picking it up Monday so will let you know how it goes! Andrew 2 Quote Link to comment
Nicolas Goutte
You could check the other thread about eGPU: Quote Link to comment
Andrew Davies
Hello all Blackmagic eGPU working well with my 2016 MacBook Pro (USB-C) and 5K LG Monitor. Looking at the activity monitor - the eGPU is doing all the work. I need to put it through its paces properly - but so far so good. Benchmark test score is roughly 5 times better than the built in Radeon Pro 460 (4GB). If any one has any specific tests or files they want me to try, feel free to ask! Cheers, Andrew Quote Link to comment
Platane
Hello all I have nearly the same configuration: MBP 13-inch 2017, i7 3.5 GHz, 16 Go Ram I revive my Blackmagic eGPU yesterday I try with Vectorworks but I'm a bit disappointed With 12'20" Without 15'40'' Best Platane Quote Link to comment
zoomer
Hmmh, minutes and seconds ... For which task ? If it is about RW Render Times, which doesn't use GPU at all, I would wonder why there are any differences in Render Time. Or are you referring to VP Rendering in any OpenGL Mode ? Do you have so complex Models that it takes so long to render your Viewports ? (Or all at one time) Then I am also a bit disappointed by the difference in results. Quote Link to comment
Platane
It's a RW render time in a VP As Cinebench is use to evaluate the Blackmagic eGPU, I thought it was working with RW.... I make more test and come back to you Quote Link to comment
zoomer
Cinebench multi/single are CPU only to. There is just a 3rd OpenGL option which measures GPU performance. Quote Link to comment
Andrew Davies
Having used my Black Magic eGPU for a few weeks now - I am a little underwhelmed. In fact, I have just tried unplugging it as VWX felt sluggish and the built in GPU was working much better. Everything suddenly felt smoother. Not sure if it was just because of a re-boot I did. What's the best way of evaluating GPU performance in VWX? Just moving around a model in OpenGL or is there anything more scientific? Quote Link to comment
Andrew Davies
Hmmm - maybe I have a faulty unit Cinebench scores 80.46 with the MacBook Pro internal GPU The BlackMagic scores 76.37..... Quote Link to comment
Platane
Hi ANdrew I made the test with CInebench and yes you may have a problem : ... 😞. Quote Link to comment
Platane
But you have a AMD Radeon PRO 460 inside so may be it's more optimise Quote Link to comment
Andrew Davies
Hi Platane The Radeon 580 score is the one that refers to the egpu. Our scores are similar for the same box which makes sense. In fact yours is a little low if anything. I’m just surprised that my internal GPU scores the same as the Radeon 580! Geekbench scores for me are a lot better using the black magic box. I don’t recall them now - but will post them here when I can. Andrew Quote Link to comment
zoomer
An internal 580 in an iMac has 127 Fps Cinebench OpenGL. I think it shouldn't be much less with an eGPU. Can you try Luxmark GPU Rendering ? BTW 1x of my dual D700 has also 80 Fps. Edited September 5, 2018 by zoomer Quote Link to comment
Andrew Davies
Hi Here are my Geek Bench Compute scores - with the on board GPUs (both) and then the Black Magic Seems that the Black Magic is working well? How do these results compare to others? Are there any tests that test OpenGL as these tests are based on OpenCL. Or is it more or less the same thing? @zoomer Have also attached a Luxmark result - let me know if there are any other modes you want me to try.
