shasta
Is there any way to get the Place Plant dialog box to display latin or common names instead of the codes? It gets hard to remember what each code means when selecting a plant to place. Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee Robert Anderson Posted March 3, 2003 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted March 3, 2003 Each plant has a "long name" and an identifier. The identifier must be unique in a file, because it's the name of the symbol which holds all the plant info, and symbol names must be unique. The Place Plant dialog lists the "long name" of the currently selected plant right below the icon pop-up. It makes more sense to list the "long name" of the plant definition rather than the Latin or common name of the plant, for the simple reason that you may have several plant definitions using the same species, differentiated only by plant size, preparation or other detail. For example, you might have a particular species that you are using in a 4" container size (for planting over a large area) and also a 5gal container size (for accent planting). Same Latin Name and common name, but different plant definitions. The best thing to do is to make the "long name" of the plant meaningful. In some of our documentation examples, we appended a size indicator to the common name for the "long name" and used a consistent code for the ID name. See the example below: Example: 4" caliper Red Maple Latin name: Acer Rubrum (given) Common name: Red Maple, Swamp Maple (given) ID: ACru4 Plant Name: Red Maple-4" Quote Link to comment
