VW does a pretty good job of tracing name changes - so when you change the name of your layer all the Viewports do not go black for instance. One place that would be really useful is for this to be for worksheet databases . Often - there is some change - that causes all the layers to be renamed - that then causes all the worksheets to have to be re-calibrated. The worksheet should be attached to some sort of layer ID# rather than the name so that the name change does not break the connection.
