Rules or principles for setting up new Level Types vs offsetting from existing Levels

I find there's a balance to be found between the number of Levels in a model and just offsetting from existing Levels. I'm curious to know if anybody has settled on a set of rules or principles for setting up additional Levels vs using offsets?

The current file I'm working, for instance, has the following levels.

Hi Christiaan,

Yours is a good list...I'm sure you'll agree that alot of set-up is project-dependent.  I WOULD want at least something that speaks to the "Top of Footing"....I then use an offset to get a "bottom of footing" to define the thickness of the footing.
