Shadow Catcher

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to export an image file (png) from a viewport render with a shadow catcher shader applied to a surface? So far my experiments have failed resulting in the surface rendering black when opened in Photoshop.

Hey Chris, if you have a visible background in the viewport, the rendering will be black unfortunately. It should work without the background though.

Yes.

Shadow catcher should be applied to the surface that the shadows are being cast on, not the object that is casting the shadows however. It often is wise to set your shadow catcher texture to not cast shadows of its own. Also, make sure to disable any renderworks backgrounds in your rendering style. Using backgrounds for reflection and light work fine, but the visible background needs to be disabled. If you're exporting to an image, then you'll also need to make sure you have Save Alpha Channel checked under the PNG options.

A video on this will be out soon.
