Auto Number Position

Is there a way to default the auto number position tool to left to right, rather than right to left?

Yes. You will need to open up the plugin manager, locate the Light Position Obj, press customise and under parameters change the direction to Left to Right.

 

It may not work properly with your existing file because lighting position objects are already loaded but it should be fine with a clean file.
