A way to see VW's versions in a file list

Recommended Posts

My old brain maybe playing tricks with me, but It seems to me that in the past, one was able to tell what version of VW a file was created with. If not the case, perhaps this is a wish list item.

I asked a similar question in this thread, and here's the response from @JimW

Theres no way to discern between older and newer until you open them since they both end in VWX. This is just the nature of how an OS handles a single file extension though. Anything in VWX format can be opened by the latest version of Vectorworks, but anything MCD is VectorWorks 12 or older, and can have a different default application assigned to it.

I believe files used to retain their different colour icons but now I think the OS forces them all to the icon of the last installed version.....

The only way I know of to find out which version of Vectorworks created or last saved a file is to open the file in a text editor. In amongst the first line of code it will list the versions.

Below is an example. This file has pieces that were created in VW12.5.0 and was last saved in VW2017 SP 4 (VW counts forward from the old numbering so VW2008=13).

Thanks rDesign & Kevin, I think the different coloured icon is what I was getting at. Gives me an idea for a wish list item.

Thanks @Kevin McAllister!  I only recently learned that one could open a VW file with TextEdit.  But in all that gibberish, I didn't know what to look for.  I don't think the VW 2008 = 13.0 helped but, now that I know that, there it is!  Very helpful (as long as one remembers to deduct 5...)
