Bringing several house models into a site model

I have 4 independent house models each build in its own document each using their own stories and layer structure.

I would like to bring them into a site model.  I can bring the houses in as a plan viewport onto the site but cannot view the site and house in 3D.  I can create a symbol of the house and bring it into the site model.  This seems to be the best method but when I make a symbol of the house the walls that are tied into the stories no longer align with the correct levels

You could Create design layer ex references for each house into the document with the site model.

What does this mean? If you are creating Design Layer Viewports that reference your house files they should be visible in 3d unless they are cropped. Try deleting the crop object.
