With the Selection tool active, you can right click on the edge of an object and choose "Select Coincident Objects" and you'll get a full list of any that overlap.

Say I have three different objects that are about the same size right on top of each other. I want to select the farthest third object in. what do I do? I can not get it to highlight. I do not want to bring the third item forwards.

If they don't perfectly overlap, then you would just right click on one of the non overlapping edges of the object you wanted and then use Send to Front. If you can't tell if you have it selected or not and Coincident Selection isn't usable for you, then you'd hold your mouse in the same spot and the use 2-3 Send to Backs until you see the object in front that you want.
