Project sharing - Save as vs save as copy?

Matt Overton

Question

Why is it my working file can be saved as a copy that can be just a plain old file type, but I can't save as plain old file type?

This seems backwards to me as I do this most in one of two situations:-

1) branching the file to test an option or alternative.

2) Rescinding all access to make changes to the file that don't take if project sharing is enabled.

In both cases, I want to work on new save not the open save.

Not sure if I understand.

From what I remember,

a Project file will always stay a project file.

If you want to get a normal non project file you save out a normal .vwx copy.

Maybe delete the project file if you don't need that "project" file again.

So if you want to create a branch or different version, you will make a copy,

change that into a new project file, if you want to work on it with more than

one user.

If you made a decision which "project" version is best, go on working on the

selected project file and archive the depreciated project file versions.

As there is no real versioning system in VW that other Apps may have.

I always do my versions in one file by adding additional version Layers copies

from existing Layers that get manipulated.

(shared geometry resides in the original Layer, individual version's geometry on

originalLayer_Version 1, 2, 3, ...)

As soon as a decision was made, I change final versions geometry back to original Layer

and delete the unneeded version Layers.

If I would use/need shared project files, to collaborate with others, I think I would

work the same way.

Or If I would need complete separate files for versions and finally exchange some

data between these, I would use copy and paste. I think that should also work

between project files.

Minor version change we would do by layers.

Major changes or changes that are only shared with limited audience we find better to do by new file.

Really not expecting VW to add features to help this anytime soon.

What I don't get is why they choose to actively get in the way of workflow.

Requiring the user to "Save as copy", close working file and finally open the copy.

When having exactly the same file type options in "save as" means one step?

I mean the interface is already in place as "Save as" has the drop down but with only one option.

Why have the drop down for one option?
