Rendering Gobos in VW2017

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

This is my first attempt to render Gobos in VW, and I am having an issue.  I can get the gobos to render, but ONLY on the surface area of the focus point.  I've looked through a few tutorials, but have not seen anything that has helped.  Any thoughts?  I am sure that I am missing something really simple...somewhere.  I'm using stock VW ETC units, and  templates.

Thanks,

Tom

Your test extrude is perfectly black, which in a render absorbs 100% of light that touches it. Change the text extrude to a dark grey or another color and it should render as expected:

It's because your extruded surface (floor) is filled with black. Change it to white and all is well.

That was it.  Nowhere in any documentation that I saw did it mention that.  Thank you!

I'm not sure how we could best document something like that if the user didn't know what to look for, suggestions?

The default Black in Vectorworks is perfect black, so as to be compatible with other CAD applications and their color fill systems. However, in rendering that means you effectively used this color: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vantablack Which is very cool, but irritating when you don't know what's happening.

Dying to get my hands on some of this stuff one day! I don't know how you would document this better. A very simple mistake that we have all made. Isn't that what learning new stuff is all about?

Well, my fist instinct was to look in the VW help files under "Showing Gobo Projections"  [http://app-help.vectorworks.net/2017/eng/index.htm#t=VW2017_Guide%2FLightingDesign2%2FShowing_Gobo_Projections.htm&rhsearch=gobo projection&rhsyns= &rhhlterm=gobo projection]

Perhaps making a note in there about not using a perfectly black projection surface and what it will do to the render.

Good place for us to start then, I'll let Tech Pubs know, thank you!
