trodman
Hey All, This is my first attempt to render Gobos in VW, and I am having an issue. I can get the gobos to render, but ONLY on the surface area of the focus point. I've looked through a few tutorials, but have not seen anything that has helped. Any thoughts? I am sure that I am missing something really simple...somewhere. I'm using stock VW ETC units, and templates. Thanks, Tom Edited December 15, 2016 by trodman Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
This is not normal behavior. You're using Fast Renderworks? Quote Link to comment
trodman
I have tried fast as well as final, and both look the same other than sharpness of the render. Attaching my test file (VW2017) Gobo Projection.vwx Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
I'm still using 2016, which is less helpful (I'm a teacher, our lab has 2016) but I'll take a look if you export to 2016 Quote Link to comment

Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted December 15, 2016 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted December 15, 2016 Your test extrude is perfectly black, which in a render absorbs 100% of light that touches it. Change the text extrude to a dark grey or another color and it should render as expected: 1 Quote Link to comment
markdd
It's because your extruded surface (floor) is filled with black. Change it to white and all is well. Mark 1 Quote Link to comment
trodman
That was it. Nowhere in any documentation that I saw did it mention that. Thank you! 1 Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
Jim beat me to it. I was just about to say the same thing! 1 Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted December 15, 2016 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted December 15, 2016 I'm not sure how we could best document something like that if the user didn't know what to look for, suggestions? The default Black in Vectorworks is perfect black, so as to be compatible with other CAD applications and their color fill systems. However, in rendering that means you effectively used this color: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vantablack Which is very cool, but irritating when you don't know what's happening. Dying to get my hands on some of this stuff one day! I don't know how you would document this better. A very simple mistake that we have all made. Isn't that what learning new stuff is all about? trodman
Well, my fist instinct was to look in the VW help files under "Showing Gobo Projections" [http://app-help.vectorworks.net/2017/eng/index.htm#t=VW2017_Guide%2FLightingDesign2%2FShowing_Gobo_Projections.htm&rhsearch=gobo projection&rhsyns= &rhhlterm=gobo projection] Perhaps making a note in there about not using a perfectly black projection surface and what it will do to the render. 1 Quote Link to comment

Good place for us to start then, I'll let Tech Pubs know, thank you! Quote Link to comment
Andy Broomell
And perhaps also on the page "Adding Light Sources" since this applies also to general Light objects in addition to Spotlight lighting devices. http://app-help.vectorworks.net/2017/eng/index.htm#t=VW2017_Guide%2FRendering%2FAdding_Light_Sources.htm Quote Link to comment
