Replace Symbol Instance - Bug (or Feature Request)

Thomas Wagensommerer

Question

If you control click on a symbol instance in the drawing, the contextual menu offers you to replace this symbol by another one. If you do this the symbol will loose all information in its record. This happens even if the replacement symbol has the same record format attached. In this case all data is reset to default values. This is not how things should work in a data rich BIM environment.

My feature request (or bug report) would be:

If a symbol instance is replaced by a different symbol, which also has the same record format attached, all data is saved and written to the new symbol instance.

I have a script that I really like that does this.  I posted it waaaaaaay back in 2013.  It replaces the selected symbol with the symbol that is active in the resource browser, but keeps all the data in the outgoing symbol  UNLESS you name the field of the data in a way that tells it to keep the data for those fields in the incoming symbol.

Here's the link:

Only now finally occurring to me that I could just post them here :-)

This link should work for the movie that explains it.   http://www.verysmallgroup.com/_Media/superreplace-2.mov

Keep in mind that I wrote this script 3 years ago for my own use.  so it's not very polished.  (Not that my current scripts are, either!)

But I still use it and it still works in 16 and 17.

If you want to use all the values of the current object or all the values of the new symbol.

I don't think it lets you pick and choose which values to keep and which to replace, ala the spotlight feature, which knows what values belong to the incoming symbol and what values belong to that instance of whatever symbol is used.
