Brandon Wardell
I've asked about this before, but I thought I'd ask in a slightly different way. I'm trying to rebuild a file I received from a major regional theatre with 3d positions, and have successfully renamed/removed all but one of the old lighting positions. No matter what I do, I can't create a "Cat 2A" because somewhere, hidden in this file, is another object with that name. Most likely I'm just missing something, is there a way to search for all named objects? I've attached the file in case someone else can crack this. thanks Magic_Play_Plot.vwx Quote Link to comment
michaelk
The culprit is Cat 1B. All objects in VW have or can have names. In 2016 and before you can look in the data tab of the OIP and there is a name field. The value in the field 'Light Position Object'.'Position Name' is 'Cat 1B'. BUT… the name of that object is 'Cat 2A' Change that name or delete that position and recreate it and you should be good to go. hth mk Jim W What happened to the name field in the OIP in 2017??!!?!!!?!!?! Brandon Wardell
OK you're simultaneously blowing my mind and solving 50% of my Vectorworks problems right now. That being said, help me out: under the Data tab I don't see any information--no info record is selected. Edited September 26, 2016 by Brandon Wardell Quote Link to comment
michaelk
In Version 2016, when I select Cat 1B I see this in the OIP Shape tab: And I see this in the OIP Data tab: mk Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
OK, interesting. I see this (on MB Pro) Quote Link to comment
michaelk
Just to save any future headaches - here are all of your light position objects, their position names and their object names: hth mk Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
How did you create this database? Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
More accurately, what parameters did you use? Quote Link to comment
michaelk
Criteria : Type is Lighting Position. Quote Link to comment
michaelk
Are you using 2016? Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
Yes using 2016. Haven't used Editable worksheets for a few versions. Quote Link to comment
michaelk
That's good because they don't exist any more :-) This is just a regular worksheet. I think Editable Worksheets were a Spotlight only thing that got phased out years ago and replaced by the current worksheet. I don't know why you are getting a different value for the name than I am. Very puzzling. I'll send back the same drawing with the worksheet. Tell the worksheet to recalculate (Worksheet-1 > File > Recalculate). See if you get the same thing I do. hth mk Magic_Play_Plot~.vwx Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
Yes, very weird, and I'm still seeing the difference in the OIP, even with your new file but the worksheet shows the Cat 2A name. So I can't change the value via the worksheet? Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
Inexplicably, it finally allowed me to name them properly, but if I alter them in any way they revert to a Cat 2B-1 kind of scenario. I don't know, it often seems like there is some corruption sneaking in every time an older file gets migrated to the most recent version... Quote Link to comment
michaelk
No. Name is one of those attributes you can't edit via a worksheet. Probably for a good reason. Not sure why we are seeing different values from the same file. Maybe because some of the light position objects were locked they didn't refresh? (just guessing) mk Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
You can't edit the name in the worksheet (probably because it does not have the proper checking to make sure that names are not duplicated), But you can Right Click in the row header (i.e. 2.7) and choose Select Item and then click into the OIP to change the name. You do have to recalc the worksheet to show the changes. Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
Still no option to change the name in the OIP. Baffled. Quote Link to comment
michaelk
Is the position locked? mk Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
Nope. I've removed all locked cat positions. That may have ultimately been the problem, I'll keep an eye out for that in the future. Yet another example of how differently some people draft. Quote Link to comment
michaelk
It wouldn't hurt if you have time to call tech support on Monday. Have them download these two files from this thread that are saved with their different conditions. Maybe they can find the culprit. mk Quote Link to comment
Brandon Wardell
Will do. Thanks for the help! Quote Link to comment
JBenghiat
If this is an older file, Position Name and object name weren't as well coordinated. Now, there should be a lot more intelligent triggers and error checks to keep the fields in sync. You shouldn't need to change any any of the name fields -- just change the Position Name field, and the object will take filling in the name. You may need to trigger the name change -- for example, rename "Cat 1B" to "Cat 1B1" and then back. If you have a lot of mis-named objects, you may need to change several names "Cat 1B*," "Cat 1A*," etc. in order to free up names in the name list. You could also have an object that's not a lighting position with a conflicting name. You can set your worksheet to find any object with that name (With the database row option). Specify the following for columns: =L for layer =C for class =T for object type That can help you locate a wayward object. =N will give you name, but you can't edit this from the worksheet.
