VW 2016 performance worse than VW 2015

Question

Hi,

In our interior design office we have a subscription to Vectorworks Service Select (VSS), making it possible to use the latest release of Vectorworks. But now with VW 2016 we experience serious performance issues. In fact the performance is way worse than VW 2015... Strange...

Let me try to explain the problem:

We have two powerful Fujitsu workstations: Windows 10 pro 64-bit, Intel Xeon E3-1246 8-core 3.5GHz, 24GB RAM, SSD + HDD, MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti. We have been talking to the kind people of VW support here in Belgium but they can't help us. First, they told us the problem could be the graphics card. So we upgraded the Quadro K600 to the MSI's, because the Quadro's didn't have sufficient memory to run VW 2016 smoothly (while the same file runs perfectly well in VW 2015... Go figure...). After the upgrade we saw no difference at all... (note: we didn't reinstall VW after the upgrade, could that be the issue?). While other graphic intensive apps received a serious performance upgrade we saw no difference at all in VW 2016.

We immediately reported our findings to VW but received no response... We then received our invoice for the yearly payment of the VSS program but we politely protested this invoice as we would like to see a solution for this problem before we pay for future updates that work even slower.

Is there anyone that has experienced similar issues?

Thank you very much!

Thank you very much for including the dxdiag, your system's hardware config does not seem to be the problem, this machine should be performing very well.

Could you send me one of your slower files in a private message? Direct send via the message system or sending me a link to a dropbox/google drive etc would work fine. I can take a closer look and see what might be slowing things down.

(A quick note to check though, go to Tools > Options > Vectorworks Preferences on both 2015 and 2016, check the settings under Display and 3D specifically, make sure that 2016 was given the sme settings that you are using in 2015 for the comparison, 2016 had some different default settings.)

So all problems related to OpenGL Viewport Performance in 3D or 2D Top Plan View ?
Or ist it Program Performance like opening and editing Window Tool Settings ?

So maybe this will solve itself with the release of VW 2017 and its 2D View Speed improvements announced.

@chrstphreplied to you via PM.

The odd part is that it was slower in 2015 than in 2016 on adequate hardware. Normally if you get a slowdown between 2015 and 2016 it's hardware related but doesn't seem to be the case here.

Actually, it was faster in 2015... :)

Confirmed the issue here. Looks like its related to layers with different scales combined with Unified View being turned off, which isn't tested very often anymore by engineering so it may have been missed in acceptance testing. Submitting this file to them now to see if they can do anything about it in 2016.

Some good news: It is significantly faster in the 2017 beta.

Tested it myself; I cut-pasted all the drawings from the layers to one layer and indeed, now it is nearly identical in speed as VW2015. I would say the speed difference is now VW2016 = 5% slower than VW2015...

Let's see what engineering will do

None so far, however best case it would be a change in a service pack, nothing that would be extremely soon. Did the 2017 demo work any slower or faster?

Depending on your distributor it may not be available yet, it is out in the US but I am not sure where you are located.
