grant_PD
I have a desk that's been modeled in a 3d modeling program. I can only bring the desk in as a mesh of 3d polygons. Is there any way to convert this to a regular solid thing? Quote Link to comment
Kevin McAllister
You could try Convert to NURBS and then use Stitch and Trim Surfaces. I've had some success that way. Usually its just faster to re-model it..... Kevin Edited September 8, 2016 by Kevin McAllister Quote Link to comment
zoomer
If the mesh is ok, you can use the push pull tool and move one face 1 cm and back again. That will convert to a generic solid. If the mesh has holes, it will not work. But if the mesh is "quite" ok, it may work but may also result in a generic solid that can't do much or don't want. If it is an important part, it may be worth to go into the mesh "group" and check or repair holes, missing, double or overlapping 3D Polygons - before conversion. 1 Quote Link to comment
Benson Shaw
Not sure if this will help, but try enclosing the mesh inside a solid, eg a cube or sphere, then select both and Model>Intersect Solids. Might create a solid. -B Quote Link to comment
grant_PD
I'm going to try Benson's approach. I had a similar thought to close it up and then "dip" it into a solid to create a new form. Quote Link to comment
Kevin McAllister
I'd be curious to know what happens. When I've tried this approach before, VW thought it had created a solid but really it was still a hollow shell when you sectioned it. The "solid" was essentially just the outside form. zoomer
That can happen if the mesh was half "clean" only. Keep a copy to try to close holes, play with directions, overlapping faces, ... Quote Link to comment
Benson Shaw
Convert the solid intersection to Generic Solid. Testing with the Split tool shows a filled in volume rather than just a bunch of surfaces. At least in a test of simple meshes that works. -B 1 Quote Link to comment
