All curved created equal

Kevin McAllister

Question

I would like all curves (lines, open polylines, arcs, NURBS curves) to be created equal. I'm tired of all the games. My wishes -

- that 2d curves didn't disappear when editing the 3d portion of a symbol or auto hybrid. I need to be able to work with guideline geometry in all views, not just top/plan.

- that 2d curves could be extended using a command like the Extend NURBS command. Often you want to extend a 2d curve along the same curvature.

- that curves could be seen from their end views so I can easily see and grab them. This is especially a problem with straight NURBS curves looking end on.

- that all curves, regardless of 2d or 3d, rendered the same in all render modes and that they rendered like any other line.

- that NURBS curves could clip surfaces in true views regardless of whether they are in the same plane as the object being clipped. This includes clipping other NURBS curves. The clipping should occur along the perceived crossing points in the true view.

The 2d/3d mess has gotten out of hand. Its all become so convoluted and needs to be cleaned up desperately.

Kevin, Hi,

If you have this icon selected you will see all the lines below so you are able to edit and snap to the lines below Just be careful that you only move the vertexes in the orientation you need otherwise they can snap to lower levels.

HTH

Attached is editing an Auto Hybrid with "Show other objects while in edit mode" is on and off.

Alan,

Not quite what I was referring to regarding disappearing lines. Try this -

- edit a hybrid 2d/3d symbol or an auto hybrid.

- switch to front view.

- switch to screen plane in the mode bar.

- draw any 2d line, circle or other shape.

- you can see it because its highlighted.

- deselect it and it disappears.

Try the same experiment using a 3d only symbol and everything behaves the same as if you were editing directly in the design layers.

The problem here is 2d lines and objects are often used for layout and to define consistent snap points while modelling. These objects are then deleted before exiting the symbol / auto hybrid. Right now this type of workflow is almost impossible because of this bug.

Kevin

(PS> you'll discover you can't actually put NURBS curves into auto hybrids ;-) )
