Wish list: sub-menus in "saved views" dropdown

line-weight

Question

The saved views are very useful (especially working in 3D) but it's easy for the list to become long, and annoying to search through, which somewhat defeats the purpose.

It's possible to name classes so that in the classes dropdown, you can have them grouped into submenus.

Can we have something similar for Saved Views?

We need basically a folder structure for everything in the navigation pallet. Design Layers, Sheet Layers, Saved Views - all of these - especially with Project Sharing - get too long and would really benifit from a clever folder, tab, or nesting system.

Yes. Drawing organisation is becoming more complex and the systems need to cope with this.

Eg, layers - it used to be fairly simple when you could essentially have a layer per storey. If, for example, I wanted to make a revision to one floorplan it was quite easy to duplicate it, keep the old one intact and make quick edits to the new one. Perhaps have several versions of each floorplan, when considering different options. Then, once a decision had been made on which option to pursue it was easy to discard other options, or keep them in reserve as desired.

But now, the setup we seem to be encouraged to have for 3D/BIM involves several layers for each storey (walls, slabs, etc). So to carry out the equivalent of the above process it would be necessary to duplicate several layers for each option. If those layers you be bundled together that would make the process less cumbersome.

(I know there's the "storeys" thing now, which might address some of these things, but that is so confusing I've given up on it for the time being, and it doesn't seem all that flexible).

I have 1 Layer per story only, including all BIM stuff.

Sometimes I do some extra Layers for non-Arch stuff like Cameras+Lights and Landscape.

My final Class Reduce Mechanism is the use of :

- 1 Class per Material like Concrete, Concrete CIP, Steel, .....,

- BIM Parent Classes like Doors, Windows; Walls, Stairs, ...,

- some 2D only Classes

So only 1 Class for all Door Panels + Window Sashes + Roof Borders + ...

when they all use the same Aluminium silver gray ano Material.

The Parent BIM Classes will still allow to control Visibility separately.

It was not by free will ;)

I was long time fighting against misusing Classes for Render Materials.

As you (should) have RW Materials to assign these.

It was only the C4D Export that forced me to rethink my BIM Classification.

I had things like Door_Glass_Clear + Window_Glass_Clear + Fassade_Glass_Clear

under my Door_Main, Window_Main, ... Classes to separate Architectural Parts

completely. That leads to many Classes.

It was a tip from a german forum user that those Main Classes will filter anyway.

So still all set to "by Components" of course. A Wall will be drawn on the Wall_Main

Class while their Components use the common Material Classes.

Same for Symbols that will be all on a Symbol_Main Class.

If these Main Classes stay visible, you can switch through your currently active

Material Classes to check Elements Class Settings without having anything

accidentally hidden in Symbols or Parts.

And the only way

So I like to see Materials as complete BIM Materials with all information,

including RW Render Material Settings, Cost per m^3 or m^2, Fire Protection,

cleaning instructions for facility management and all that stuff.

Define your Materials one place (Ressource Browser), assign these to multiple

Bim Components. So the BIM Parts get their Information automatically.

(like Energos settings and such)
