worksheet won't read new record field

We have an existing worksheet set up to read certain fields of a record format for easy export. We have added a new field to the record format. In the worksheet, we added a column, and then used the same type command as the other columns:

=('record name'.field name)

however, when the command is entered, it only repeats it for each of the selected criteria instead of actually reading the field value.

We so far have tried quitting VW, and even restarting the mac in hopes it would recognize it as existing.

Anything else we can try?

UPDATE:

We took out the space in between 2 words in the field name and it started working. Unfortunately, the field name actually does have a space in it, and one of the other columns in the worksheet that did work (and still does) has a space in it. So a blanket "don't use spaces" is not an acurate assessment of the problem. We still don't know why it works/doesn't work, but for now, it is working.
