billtheia
In the process of making the jump from VW2015 to VW2016. The Render Style dialog box has changed. There is no longer an Exposure setting. In VW2015 (and before,) I used this variable to tune in my renders. For interiors, I frequently needed to crank this up to 200 or 250 to get a sufficiently bright image. I tried using the Emitter Brightness setting but it didn't seem to have any effect (as I have found to be the case in previous versions of VW.) I'm using a single heliodon and a physical sky. In VW2016, I've had to resort to changing the brightness settings for each of my light sources. This allowed me to get bright interior renders but it doesn't allow me to easily tweak the light settings between viewports. With the exposure setting, I could crate multiple Render Styles with different exposure settings. That allowed me to have Render Styles for both interior and exterior renders using the same light sources. I also allowed me to apply different exposure settings to different interior renders. Has this setting been moved or has NVW eliminated it? See attached screenshots. 1 Quote Link to comment
rDesign
Bill: take a look at this thread. Quotes copied from that thread explaining that in Vw2016 you now have to create a RW Camera to get 'exposure' control: You can still do it the old way without using a camera, but if you want to control the exposure in a better way then add a camera to the scene, make it active, turn Camera Effects on in Custom RW or use FQRW and you're on your way. HTH I have added a wish to control exposure without creating a RW camera, which is what I think I'm seeing here. For now exposure is only available by using a RW Camera object and rendering with Camera Effects on in the render settings. I believe the Vw2016 Help file has incorrect and outdated info as it still refers to adjusting the 'Image Exposure' parameter in the Custom Renderworks settings; I believe it is the same help file page from Vw2015. billtheia
Thanks, Tim. Interesting post. I see now that the "physical camera" allows me to set ISO, shutter speed, & aperture. I'll have to mess around with those & see what happens. Quote Link to comment
zoomer
increase ISO => brighter decrease Shutter Speed number (=1/xx s) => brighter decrease Aperture value (=1/xx,x) => brighter Just as it works for a normal SLR/DSLR Beside Brightness, (in real world) Shutter Speed has influence on Motion Blur Aperture size has influence on depth of field* (and sharpness/quality) ISO has influence on quality/grain (* available in VW too) ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed "Values" correspond. Doubling ISO and halving Aperture or Shutter Speed numbers will double Brightness. If you take one up and and another value down, Brightness will stay same (But you will control other photographic features) In Short : ISO 200, A 2.8, S 1/250 s will give the same exposure as ISO 200, A 5.6, S 1/125 s or ISO 800, A 11, S 1/60 Quote Link to comment

billtheia
Thanks, Zoomer. I'm already familiar with ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. I just need to spend some time fiddling with it to see what works best. Quote Link to comment
zoomer
Iso and Shutter Time have no other influence than Exposure in VW. Only Aperture will also influence DOF, if you may use that. I start with ISO, plus some Shutter Speed if more range needed. Quote Link to comment
zoomer
OK, I realized that I miss that general Exposure setting, that disappeared VW 2016, myself. It is great that there came exposure control in Camera settings. But I think most of the users won't even use Cameras but eyeballing their perspectives from OpenGL View or Saved Views, as I do for quick screenshots. This way there is no more Exposure setting available and when using realistic Material Absorption settings in C4D Engine, your White will always look trist and gray. So I think that overall Exposure setting should come back. Quote Link to comment
