pdrake2126
well, maybe it's not complex to some, but i've never had to make this in vectorworks. in other software i'm able to offset the sweep, but i can't figure it out here. see attached image. thanks for any help. vectorworks 2016 Edited October 2, 2015 by pdrake2126 Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted October 2, 2015 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted October 2, 2015 Two slightly modified interlocking sweep objects and a central extrude. The trick in getting the drill/spiral look is the "Pitch" value for the sweep. Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted October 2, 2015 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted October 2, 2015 Make sure to check the Help articles for any tools or commands you are having trouble with, it will explain what each field value does: http://app-help.vectorworks.net/2016/eng/index.htm#t=VW2016_Guide%2FObjects_edit2%2FSweeping_Objects.htm&rhsearch=sweep&rhhlterm=sweep&rhsyns=%20 Quote Link to comment
pdrake2126
hmmm, i'm getting a warning dialogue that says it can't generate the sweep. (even though it shows a preview.) [img:center]http://i.imgur.com/JHjcaSn.jpg[/img] Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted October 2, 2015 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted October 2, 2015 Make sure your profile object is closed and not self-intersecting, that can cause the error sometimes. If that isn't it, post the file here and I can take a look. Quote Link to comment

pdrake2126
thanks i'm trying to make a shell for foam carving that will go around a steel structure making a column. our company makes weird stuff sometimes. it's for a katy perry show, so it's going to be a large candy column that spins. of course, the client needs to see a rendering. i prefer to build the 3D components to scale and engineered as close as i can to what will be built even for renderings. saves time on the back end. Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted October 2, 2015 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted October 2, 2015 It allowed me to sweep it, but i only had the locus and the profile selected. Did you have this rectangle in the selection as well, or was it just for size reference? Also, I have better luck creating a sweep with default values first, then altering them after the fact rather than configuring everything right up front, not sure why, but it seems to be more resilient that way. pdrake2126
i only used the profile and the locus. the rectangle was a size reference. that's odd. i used the default value and then kept increasing until i got the error. i got to 2510°.
