DXF Export - all Face Normal Flipped ?

zoomer

Question

When I export a DXF,

and load it into Modo or Cinema, all Faces are flipped.

Their Normals point inwards instead of outwards.

This can lead to problems for GI calculations.

If you don't want to convert to more render time consuming 2-sided Materials,

you will need to Flip all Faces manually, because you will see only the backsides.

Why old fashioned DXF anyway ?

Because it is the only way to keep your Layer/Class Structure and get

one complete Mesh for each Class.

Modern Export Formats like FBX will bring Geometry in much better,

include even Materials, Cameras and Lights,

but unfortunately, each single Solid will import as a separate Mesh Item.

(Plus, all 4 Point Polygons get Triangulated)

Most 3D Apps aren't optimized for so many Mesh Items and/or Groups,

containing just a few Polygons.

It slows Editing down and you don't have the options to sort such Geometry.

Would be nice if we could get All geometry out of VW by DXF,

with Triangulation deactivated.

So that we get as much Quad Polys as possible (for Faces like Rectangles

that don't have any wholes or complex borders).

Triangulation so distractive from Architecture.

Also current 3D Apps prefer Quads.

And DXF is still the only option to get VW geometry out in a ordered way

into a 3D App, so that a complete Class gets exported as one single Mesh Item.
