2016 Selection

ALT Marquee does not work as expected in any kind of perspective view.

Orthogonal is ok.

I assume that the view shows a perspective image of the geometry but

the ALT+selection searches in the orthogonal view.

If you go far over your geometry with your ALT+Marqee, you will see objects

highlighting at different positions as your Marquee borders.

But it does not select when crossing lines/edges,

which it does in orthogonal views.

Really, it works for you ?

I tried again different files and all settings of the selection tool.

No difference.

For me it looks clearly like the selection marquee+ALT works in a virtual

non distorted orthogonal Model that I can't see behind the perspective

view.

To test this,

compare a simple scene with some objects first in orthogonal 3D isometric view

where everything works as expected, as soon as the ALT+marquee hits a line,

the object gets highlighted.

Than switch to perspective mode like normal or wide which distorts the geometry

sufficient.

Your ALT+Marquee will, depending on view orientation, maybe look like it works

on the upper part of the view window. So try to marquee from the lower, more

distorted, part of the view.

You should see the marquee will select the object at some point, not when it is

touching object lines but after larger overlapping.

Which I think would be the position of that line in a non distorted orthogonal view.

The same happens with f.e. Lasso style.

Zoomer, Sorry, I thought you were using a Windows computer since you said ALT+marquee, but I see in your specs you use Macs.

After following your instructions I CAN recreate the issue. It is strange because there seems to be no rhyme or reason why some objects get selected as you touch them, and others don't.

Can you send Jim a screen shot movie so he knows exactly what the problem is, and then he can respond or submit it as a bug.

Hi Bruce,

how is the ALT key called on a Mac ? Option Key ?

Yes I'm on a Mac.

A screenshot will not say much and I'm not experienced with screen videos.

But the last instruction should make it visible for everybody.

Can't imagine that it will work different on a PC.

Can you also try if the 2 new Quick Prefs Icons for Rendermode and Projection Mode

do work for You ?

For me they don't do/change anything at all.

(The older drop downs above do work of course)

Maybe this is a OS X only problem ?

Confirmed... Not working on my computers as well.

The functionality of these new Render & Projection Mode Quick Settings icons have not been well explained as they are actually working as intended. Take a look at this other thread:

2016 New Quick settings buttons/Icons

That sets the defaults for when you change views, not the actual mode itself.

Set the defaults, then go back to top plan then go to a 3D view and it should default to the new settings. If you change those defaults then go back to top/plan and a 3d view again, they should obey the new settings.

On Hand it makes sense that Quick Settings contains "Settings" and the

drop downs above do switch between Modes.

On the other Hand, all the Quick settings do things immediately when you

hit the button - except these 2 new ones.

If it will be they way Vincent said,

the Render Mode button with 2 possibilities should not be a tedious drop down

but one Button OFF=wireframe ON=OpenGL, like all other Quick Prefs.

More difficult for the Perspective Mode.

I Think it would be ok to switch between OFF=orthogonal ON=perspective

(If really needed, an additional dropdown with Focal Lenghts)

Now I see how the Quick Settings work! Actually, I think they could be helpful given their intended use. The "clues" to how they work are in their tool tips, and the settings may evoke new workflows.

Try this in the Quick Prefs drop downs:

Set the Default 3D Render Mode to OpenGL.

Set the Default 3D Project to Normal Perspective.

Switch to top/plan and render wireframe.

Use the Flyover tool to initiate a 3D view.

Boom! Now you see how those setting work.

Thanks Tim for helping clear this up.

I am able to confirm anomalous behavior when using alt-marquee to select objects in a Perspective view. My symptoms are not exactly as described above but I see strange behavior across a number of Macs here, submitting now.

Users CAN submit bugs directly via this link:

http://www.nemetschek.net/support/bugsubmit.php

But feel free to post about them first for confirmation if you want to be sure, helps make Engineering and QAs life a little easier. I want to help users be able to create more specific and useful bug reports themselves, likely I'll create an article/video that explains proper bug submit procedure, but I have a few things on my plate pressing before that.

Thanks Jim,

I put the Bug Link to my bookmarks.

Bruce,

the settings of those new buttons are quite important.

These settings came 2015.

Just as you described, it was tedious to switch back to OpenGL for your

3D Views, each time after you switched to Top Plan View.

This setting just got there additional buttons in QP as it may be changed

a little more often than you would change other settings in hidden

VW preferences.

I used these at the beginning of 2015 a short time and realized that all

view modes are well suited for 3D Isometric/Custom Views.

But for all other Orthogonal views, Perspective and OpenGL mode do disturb

much more than it helps.

Therefore I use VW in "pre-2015" mode with all set to wireframe and orthogonal

and switch to OpenGL manually, as I did in the past.

So still vote for those settings in "true 3D views" only.

Unfortunately the Snapping seems to be influenced negative

by Perspective Mode too.

To test :

- disperse some extrudes or any 3D objects having Z-Height

- best use the wide perspective to make it more obvious,

- start from a Perspective Isometric view

- Rotate view until everything is nicely distorted

- switch from automatic to layer plane

- activate Rectangle Tool and try to snap to the upper corners of your extrudes.

Some corners seem to be snap-able although in a very distoreted area of the view,

some others won't be snap-able.

While snapping to Center of Object's Faces seems to always work.

I have a new small test file where Snapping now works as expected without any problems.

The Cursor Snapping Click Sound seems to be missing for 2D Creation Tools

anytime.

As for the Selection thing in Perspective Views.

In the current small Test File - it works well with Extrudes.

But Selection by ALT Marquee seems to not work for Solid Additions and Walls !

Edit :

Not really.

Even some Extrudes/Windows and Doors will highlight when the Marquee Frame

touches but deselected when they are only surrounded bei the Frame,

while others stay selected as expected and vice versa ....
