Regarding Linked Detail Callouts

If you move the viewport that the detail is linked to, then the detail callout’s sheet number updates.

If the viewport that the detail is linked to is DELETED, then the detail callout is deleted

BTW, the Section-Elevation Marker also has this "linking" ability

Hi All,

Sorry about the late "come back"

Someone asked about the Alternate Section Fill in the Roof Style set up dialog...you can have a roof component's edge condition "change" by selecting a portion of the wall that the roof is linked to...see attached where the rafters "change" from insulated to non-insulated at the "Outer Face of the Wall Core"

Hi,

Just downloaded 2016 and it seems great so far. I like the mac user interface improvements, and I'm looking forward to diving into Marionette.

I successfully installed 2016 on my desktop, but was hoping to put it on my laptop as well. In the past this has worked as long as I only had it open on one machine at a time. Now however it's just rejecting the SN during install as invalid. Is this a functionality that has been removed? Do I need two seats to have it on two of my own machines? Thanks,

if its a TRIAL key it will only let you put it on one machine, but a pro license should be installable on 2. If its saying the SN is invalid though, make sure that when pasting it you dont have any exra characters and that its for the correct version, any of the other versions would give an SN invalid error.

If it keeps happening, get in touch with support tech@vectorworks.net directly.

Rob,

If I understand your question correctly, let's say I have no layers checked out, when I go to cut a section, once I decide onto what sheet layer it will be placed, I will be asked if I want to check out that sheet layer. (I will need to answer "Yes") Remember, you can check out both design and sheet layers.

Does that help?

Another Project Sharing question.

I understand from the video that each person can check out layers to work on. Who would be in charge of cutting Sections, Details and Elevation Viewports onto sheets? And then how does one check out that sheet to do annotations on?

Rob

Check out the last 3 videos of the Architect Getting Started Guide, we added three chapters devoted to explaining that and other aspects of project sharing specifically:

Thanks Jim, I appreciate your quick responses, and that link leading to steps in Architect will be very helpful. I have watched the three videos on project sharing a few times since yesterday, but it doesn't quite get to what I am looking for.

If you are making more demo videos, would it be possible to see the next steps of project sharing after the privileges have been made and the team gets going on the project?

I am trying to understand who in the line is responsible for generating the various sheets used in a drawing set. If I were to check out a layer and started making Viewport section cuts, where do those viewports go to? Are they a sheet on my layer and then get amalgamated back when one does a "Save and Commit" or would the administrator be responsible for setting up sheets and sections?

After the Elevations and Section and various other sheets are made, they would need to be annotated, and I don't see where in the check out of layers that is done.

I understand you got a lot going on with this new release, I'm just trying to wrap my head around this new feature. I don't want to get a project going on it until I understand the ins and outs of it.

Cheers,

Rob

I have only just got use to 2015 and completing a standard template / file for all our projects to be started from rather than a blank new document. The drawing was created as new in 2015 and all standard classes and layers for our office were set up. Now updating to 2016. Do I start all over again with a new file? Or simply do I convert the 2015 file to a 2016 file to save time setting up standard classes, layers and sheets again?

I feel it is best to start afresh with each upgrade to avoid bugs, inconsistencies, etc but perhaps I am being too cautious.

What is the correct procedure?

Feel free to convert directly and continue working, I have only seen one conversion-specific issue so far, related to Window objects with custom sashes, but that can be corrected thusly:

Response from one of our specialists:

"If I were to check out a layer and started making Viewport section cuts, where do those viewports go to?

Just like in a regular Vectorworks file, the viewports go on a sheet layer.

Are they a sheet on my layer and then get amalgamated back when one does a "Save and Commit" or would the administrator be responsible for setting up sheets and sections?

Any new sheets created in a Working File will get committed back to the Project File.

After the Elevations and Section and various other sheets are made, they would need to be annotated, and I don't see where in the check out of layers that is done.

If you are annotating in the annotation space of a viewport that is placed on a Sheet Layer, you need the Sheet Layer checked out.

Some general comments:

A Working File works like a regular Vectorworks file. All operations are done exactly the same way, such as creating section viewports.

The only difference is the restriction on what you can do based on your permission setting and the layers you have checked out. Layers that can be checked out are both design layers AND sheet layers.

As long as you have a permission setting of “Layers-Unrestricted” or higher, you can create a section viewport on a NEW sheet layer.

If you have “Layers-Restricted” permission setting, you can create a section viewport on an EXISTING sheet layer.

Hope that is helpful."

I want to download 2016 and start playing around with it, but I want to keep working in 2015 for the next few months since I'm teaching a Vectorworks class and the students are all on 2015.

I know how to keep 2015 my default program for .vwx files, but I just wanted to double check that I won't have any issues with serial numbers and having both operable at the same time?

When you launch Vectorworks 2016 for the first time it will ask you if you want it to be the default application to open VWX files, say no.

You can manually alter it to either one later on via these steps:

Jim, thanks for your reply.

What's a real pain is downloading the upgrade. You tick download licenses. It appears there is no option to just down one licence at a time on each pc. So the download is going to one pc. We have 3 licenses for architect and renderworks. Over 8 hours later and the upgrade is still downloading and its on its fifth zipped file. One file has failed.

If your serial numbers all start with E, you can just download the E series installer once and then copy it to all of your machines from whichever machine you did the original download to. Theres just one E series installer for Mac and one for Windows, you shouldnt have needed five downloads.

So (...hesitant pause...) it seems like there are a handful of bugs already found in Vw2016, several of which involve new features and frankly should have been found & fixed prior to release.

Palettes not properly docking after restart in OSX, Crashes involving Marionette, RW cameras must be on a 0' elevation layer, just to name a few.

Is there an estimated delivery date for SP1? Thanks.

OK, thanks Jim. Is it now restricted to two machines? I thought it was three previously.

The EULA since around 2012 has allowed for 2 machines to have Vectorworks installed concurrently and you can use either or, but not both at once.

A few Sales employees had been incorrectly informing users that they could use it on 3, but this was never the case legally.

No public dates on services packs ever, unfortunately. These change right up until the last minute. Sometimes the packs come out as expected, sometimes rushed early and sometimes delayed late.

it may seem strange, but this year we are letting chatter about bugs happen externally a great deal more than ever before in an effort to make sure they are addressed earlier and faster.

In previous years, I wasn't even permitted to say the word "Bug" publicly, instead actually instructed to say "issue" or "problem" to downplay the idea that Vectorworks could ever be broken. This was obviously an incorrect way to conduct business and -thankfully- this has finally been remedied. My coworkers who you are now starting to see in other threads are taking the time now to have these discussions externally and work with you in identifying the causes of and workaround for issues. Please continue to work with them and bring things to light as soon as you discover them.

would love to see the tech board start new forums for '16 new features, like marionette. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet but I imagine the questions/issues/feedback for features like that can be dedicated to a whole new forum.

It is a good idea. We've already been discussing doing so for Subdivisions, we very well may for Energos and Project Sharing too. For Subdiv, I had suggested we wait to make the section until we released a training set for it.

Don't get me wrong JimW — I wholeheartedly with 110% appreciate the new degree of openness and honesty on these forums! It has not gone unnoticed, and I do realize that it is relatively rare for a software company to publicly acknowledge the existence of any 'bugs'.

We all want Vectorworks to be the best BIM software that we faithful know it can be; We'll continue to help you along that path, no matter how bumpy it might be. Thanks again!
