Lighting Position Rotation on all 3 axis?

Recommended Posts

Hey There,

I consider myself a beginner in Spotlight. I have a design that needs lighting pipe positions to be angled to the A-Frame ceiling (Rotating 45 degrees on the X axis). When dropping a lighting pipe in plan view, switching to front view to rotate I get the error that hybrid objects can only be rotated on the Z Axis. Any work arounds? Surely Spotlight would have the option for this considering not all lighting positions are flat, right?

Thanks all!

Use the J rotation parameter to angle the pipe along its internal X axis. The top / plan view will continue to show the pipe in an un-rotated schematic view. Enable the Footprint option to se a top view of the pipe.

The alternative would be to use the Plot and Model View commands. The forum has a number of discussions on this process. It's not ideal, but presents a viable workflow that deals with the schematic "plot" view being different from a top view.

Thanks for that Josh! It does work before converting to a lighting position. Once you convert you cant rotate. Also once you do a J rotation parameter it seems it also doesn't rotate. At least I have a pipe that is slanted now! I only wish lights would snap to it recognizing it as a position.

I had a venue that was similar. It looked like a converted church (though, apparently it wasn't) and the FOH position was a "V" that angled 45 degrees in two directions. The end result being that the averted of the "V" was both higher and farther from the stage than the ends of the "arms."

At the time, I figured out how to create the lighting position and rotate it, but I wish that VW was smart enough to ACTUALLY recognize a position with 2 "Z" heights. That way, when you drop a light onto the position in Plan view, VW would give the light the appropriate height for that specific point on the pipe. It would be EXTREMELY useful for sectioning.
