Create Text block from Data:Name

Is there a way to create a text block from an objects' Name field in the Data tab in the OIP? I am creating simple 2d geometry over PDF versions of plans to do material take off/extimating calculations. I am naming each 2D object in the Data tab so they can be differentiated in a worksheet, but it would be useful to attach the name to the object on the layer as well. It would be great to be able to have the label created in a class so visibility could be controlled.

I'm assuming you are creating basic geometry like polylines and rectangles. Why not use the space object ?

I am just tracing over other peoples plans. I am trying to keep it simple by using 2d geometry, VW Records, and worksheets. I am deliberately avoiding anything that is a black box like VW's space object. That way I can see that AxB=C
