One file, multiple windows

Gilbert Osmond

Question

Please add the ability to open multiple windows for each open VW file.

This has been requested at least several times in the past, probably many more.

Seems like very basic functionality that ought to have been included long ago. It is troublesome in the workflow to have only 1 main window per document.

To me, UI / workflow refinements of this kind (and there are many, many more VW could use to become a truly polished, smooth working environment) add as much (or more) value for the average user than all the latest fancy BIM, point-cloud, thermal modelling, etc. features.

This is probably also one of the top features I push for personally. I use it in C4D and Blender and 3DSMax constantly and I find I want it badly whenever I come back into Vectorworks.

Adding this to the existing request which I refreshed near the end of last year. Keep on requesting, every new voice gives it more weight.

This was one of the earliest requests for it i could find:

Thanks for your speedy reply, Jim.

In these areas (the many tiny UI refinements -- things like all dialog boxes consistently remembering their size, position, & previous settings) Vectorworks resembles a giant, splendid mansion with some wings and floors in which cleaning and periodic redecorating have been neglected.

Leading to a sense of impressiveness but tinged with disappointment and occasional annoyance upon encountering said areas.

I should say, though, on the whole VW is fantastically powerful and it is allowing me to work at a level of clarity, specificity, realism, accuracy, and completeness that was unimaginable without it.

Please keep up the good work.

The oldest I can find in internal tracking is indeed mid to late 90s (there are some date inaccuracies whenever we switch the tracking software used by engineering), however I went and had a chat with engineering and got some reasons:

JimW- I doubt you meant that as a challenge ;) but I found multiple requests for this starting even further back in 2004:

It makes me sad to read through Wish List items that are more than a decade old...

Reading JimW's reasons on why this hasn't been implemented to date gives *some* hope, but I'd be surprised if it gets implemented before version 2018 (and yes - I meant that as a challenge  ).

Yes - I'd love this to be possible too - either separate windows, or something like the Model Space viewports AutoCAD has - where the window is split into 2 or more panels, with different interactive parts of the drawing visible in each one.

Come to think of it, both 3D Studio & Rhino have their interfaces set up in a similar way too.

If implemented PLEASE don't make it as it is in Revit where you need to click on the window to activate it, this really 'pees' me off in Revit, I always start zooming directly on a window only to find the window next to it (the one that is active) starts to zoom, very frustrating.

As soon as the cursor moves over a window it needs to activate automatically.
