Deleting Story Levels and Level Types

Recommended Posts

Hi all. How do I delete custom story levels for a particular story? When I edit the value of a story level a new one is created in the list and I'm not able to delete the old one.

Also, how do I delete Level Types? There is no option in the Edit Story Level dialogue box.

My concern is that my file is filling up with unused levels and level types as my model develops.

Thanks.

This is covered fairly carefully in the Level, Layers, Stories tutorial...

Here's the short answer...

Do this:

Under the Design Layers tab, choose Level Types…at the bottom of the pane.

Choose all of them, choose Delete

Go to the Stories tab, choose Default Story Levels…at the bottom of the pane

Choose all of them, choose Delete

You now have a file with NO default Story Levels, save it as a template file.

You can also eliminate selected ones with the same methodology

Hi All,

As an update to the post above, in 2019, the Level Types button was moved FROM the Design Layers tab TO the Stories tab.  The functionality remains unchanged.  You'll still need to blow the info away in the two places in the sequence described above IF you want a TOTALLY blank file. See image below.   Save it as a Template if desired...

That only removes level types.

VW propagates levels when you just want to edit one.

For example, a default Ceiling level is set at 9'.

I want it to be 10' so I edit it.

Instead of changing the one in place, VW adds another one by the same name at 10'. Now I have an extraneous one at 9' I do not want.

Trying a long way around: delete the level type altogether and then add it back in with the desired elevation.

But that does not work logically either: the 9' level disappears from the story graphic but remains in the Edit Story dialog box as <None> in the Level Type column and in the list as 1-Ceiling at 9' just under 1-Ceiling at 10'. It's still there.

I see no reference to removing these in the VW help.

Is there a good reason why it adds levels rather than just edit them?

As long as I have used VW, I still find some basics befuddling.
