domer1322
Over the years I've been wondering about this simple thing: While rendering a 3D model in RW, I can push the "esc" key to stop the rendering. However, sometimes the hotkey works, and other times it just keeps on rendering. It seems to work about 50% of the time. I've noticed this on the last several versions of VW and it is still true for VW 2015. Does anyone else have this problem ? If I'm not the only one who has this issue, is there any way to predict if the "stop rendering" hot key will work or if it won't ? Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted May 18, 2015 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted May 18, 2015 It depends, since rendering is such a system-wide resource drain, it can sometimes (depending what rendering mode you're using and the contents of your file) end up that your STOP command was registered, but has to wait for certain system resources to be freed up again before the machine can obey. Engineering is looking for a way around this to make halting a rendering more responsive. Quote Link to comment
zoomer
Same here. Depending on Files complexity aborting a rendering can take much more time than is acceptable while working. But I too think that ESC works reliable in 90%. It is just not the way a user would expect. Sometimes VW is occupied by certain tasks, so it ignores your key in - occupied by those tasks which you want to cancel by ESC. So you have to wait for those tasks to be done - until you can cancel those tasks ... Especially hard if you forgot being in a RW mode and try to rotate the view. this may refire rendering several times for that single rotation and after each ESC-abort the next render cycle starts, with its typical ESC lag. RW automatic re-rendering is nice for changing Camera Views for screenshots. It works most time but it can havoc if you change to a camera, which has an other active Layer saved in its settings, if that ever makes sense. (Thought that's what Saved Views are for ...) But RW automatic re-rendering is annoying in 98% of all else cases. Like checking a material (by going into edit mode), and chosing OK without changes, instead of pressing Cancel. Some times certain actions cause an unavoidable re-rendering, sometimes actions cause a error message. Error Message to abort re-rendering sounds good at first but the only option is to switch to wireframe - where you would prefer f.e. another mode like Open GL - or no re-render or mode change at all - just a pause. domer1322
glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem. I also agree that it is very annoying that RW starts another re-render when you're trying to edit a texture or some other property. May I suggest the software guys try to figure out a solution to this annoyance ? Quote Link to comment
zoomer
Maybe the next VW release will bring us larger improvements in RW usability plus Cinerender Update to current or coming Cinema Release, who knows ? Quote Link to comment
barkest
I find it depends on what the render is doing. For example if it is calculating geometry there is no way you can esc or anything else for that matter. Quote Link to comment
Amelia S
I'd like to back up the suggestion to improve abilities to cancel actions. One day I'll learn, but I often find myself hitting update on a viewport before I'm ready. And in many of my files, there's a long lag time after I press update and before the teapot shows up, while VW is temporarily frozen. If I try to do anything during this time, VW crashes. Likewise, sometimes I accidentally hit "edit design layer" instead of "edit annotations" in a wall section viewport, and I have to sit there while the hidden line view renders. I'm almost always unable to cancel with the escape key, or instigate a crash by hitting escape. Quote Link to comment
