CameraMatch 2015 (for Vectorworks 2015) is now available!

Quickly and accurately align, compose, and render a 3D model view to a photograph. CameraMatch gives you the tools to quickly match the perspective view of a photograph. Once the view is set, the CameraMatch Masking, Cloning, and Shadow features give you the tools needed to create finished polished renderings directly within Vectorworks!

CameraMatch 2015 Features

View Matching:

View matching is accomplished by the CameraMatch object. This object is placed in a viewport’s annotation space and contains the photo image and controls to align and manage the view of the viewport. The CameraMatch object can even set the render mode and render the viewport without leaving the annotations.

View Tuning:

Extensive view tuning controls allow fine adjustments to perfect the view. Tuning Modes adjust different aspects of the camera view including:

  • Vanishing Point distance (left, vertical, or right)
  • Field of View (camera view angle)
  • Camera Tilt
  • Camera rotation (Vertical and Horizontal)
  • Camera Distance

Masking:

Masking can hide parts of a rendered model that should be behind objects in the photo image. CameraMatch Masks do this by placing parts of the photo in front of the rendered model. Mask areas are defined by drawing a polyline over the photo. The Mask object's new Line Mode also allows the Mask to display as an unfilled polyline with a given thickness. This makes masking linear elements (i.e.: power lines, tree branches, etc.) much easier by simply drawing along the centerline of the element and given a thickness.

Cloning:

Mask objects can also be used to clone areas of the photo. This mode allows a Mask object to shift the photo image it displays. This lets a Mask object act similar the Clone tool in image editing applications. The Mask object's new Clone Scale and Clone Rotation options allow cloned areas to be scaled and rotated. This opens up many more possibilities and and flexibility.

Shading & Shadows:

Shadows and shading can be added to the rendering with the CameraMatch Shadow tool. This tools can add shadow and subtle shading to the rendering.

Hi Christiaan,

Here's the text from the "What's New" documentation:

Mask Object:

Line Mode Feature:

This new mode gives a Mask object no fill and will mask only the path of the Mask object with a given Line Width. This is useful for masking thin linear type elements (i.e.: wires and tree branches).

Without Line Mode, the Mask object must be drawn as an outline to define the shape in thickness of linear type elements. This can be tedious and difficult to keep a consistent thickness along these elements. With Line Mode, linear type elements are defined by a single path along it’s centerline, and a thickness. This is much faster to draw and gives consistent thickness along these elements

Convert Path to Outline:

The new Line Mode feature is great for quickly creating linear type masks, but what about linear type masks that have variations in thickness? The new “Convert to Outline” button answers this by converting a selected “line mode” Mask object into a regular Mask (“line mode” off) while giving it a path that matches the outline shape of the Line Mode Mask. This makes it easy to draw linear shaped Masks that need to be edited to add variations to their thickness.

Cloning (Mask Object):

Clone Scale:

The new Clone Scale feature scales the cloned image within the Mask object. This allows cloned areas that are of a different size to be scale to better blend with the area they’re cloned to. A good example of this would be cloning part of a brick wall that’s further from the camera view than the area it’s being placed. This would cause the cloned bricks to appear smaller than the bricks in the area they’re being placed. The Clone Scale feature allows the bricks to be scaled up for a better match.

Clone Rotation:

The new Clone Rotation feature rotates the cloned image within the Mask object. This allows cloned areas that are of a different angle to be rotated to better blend with the area they’re cloned to. A good example of this would be cloning part of a brick wall where the angle of coursing may not quite align with the brick in the area it’s being placed. The Clone Rotation feature allows the image to be rotated for a better match.

Shadow Object

Line Mode Feature:

This new mode gives a Shadow object no fill and will place a shadow only on the path of the Shadow object with a given Line Width. This is useful for creating linear type shadows.

Convert Path to Outline:

The new Line Mode feature is great for quickly creating linear type masks, but what about linear type masks that have variations in thickness? The new “Convert to Outline” button answers this by converting a selected “line mode” Shadow object into a regular Shadow (“line mode” off) while giving it a path that matches the outline shape of the “line mode” Shadow. This makes it easy to draw linear shaped shadows that need to be edited to add variations to their thickness.

CameraMatch Object - Fine Tune View Improvements

Improved Vanish Point Tuning:

The vanish point modes are often the best place to start tuning views. Unfortunately, these modes can also be to least intuitive. For starters, these modes have shiny new icons that better inform what the mode does. More importantly, these modes work more predictably when tuning the view.

New “Field of View” Tuning Mode:

This new tuning mode allows the view’s “Field of View” to be adjusted wider or narrower.

I would love it if you guys at panzerCAD would add a head on option to the camera match tool. stage drawings are typically head on, and it would be nice to add geometry to head on stage drawings and pictures. example attached.

oh wait, i can't attach anything larger than 8bytes. not many screenshots will fit in 8 bytes.

Hello bicameral2,

Would you mind sending me the VW file? While these "head-on" shots may be a little trickier, they're usually doable. If you don't mind, I could post a video demonstrating how to match this view. It's so much easier to explain (and understand) in a video.

Now this is pretty cool!

Weihenstephan University in Germany had their students model a specific bus stop design and then integrate it into a photo or picture. There's one placing it in a Van Gogh painting, a Star Trek scene and several others.

Hi, I am having problems getting CameraMatch to work on my Vectorworks 2016 SP3 (English) installation.

Everything goes fine till I want to place a CameraMatch Object inside a Viewport.

When I attempt to do that, first I get an error message saying: "No Resource File found! Please quit Vectorworks, reinstall the plug-in files, and try again."

How did you install the plugin? There is a .pkg file in the download, but it needs to be installed by targeting the zip file with the plugin manager instead as described below. (Sorry for the long post, these are going to be a kbase article, I just haven't gotten to it on my list yet.)

Windows:

CameraMatch can now be installed using the Vectorworks “third party plug-in installer”. DO NOT double-click the “CameraMatch 2015 Install Package” icon to install. Please follow the steps below:

First, after downloading the plugin, right click on the downloaded .zip file and choose Extract Here, if you do not extract the zip file first, you will not be able to perform the next steps.

In Vectorworks, run the “Plug-in Manager” command located in the “Tools / Plug-ins” menu.

In the Plug-in Manager dialog, go to the “Third Party Plugins” tab and click on the “Install…” button.

You will be prompted to select a plug-in package to install. Locate the CameraMatch 2015 Install Package included with this software and click “Open”.

If the plug-ins were installed correctly, you should see a dialog informing you to restart Vectorworks after installing new plug-ins.

Quit Vectorworks and launch it again.

Add the plug-ins to your workspace by going to Tools > Workspaces > Edit the Current Workspace. On the left of the Menus tab you will see an entry for Camera Match, expand the desired location to place them on the right, then click and drag the CameraMatch commands over to wherever you’d like them. In this case, we will place it under Tools.

Then under the Tools tab, again find the Camera Match items on the left, and add them into the tool set of your choosing. We recommend Visualization.

Click OK, and you can begin using the CameraMatch tools and commands.
