ifc model size

I was looking into this recently and even with drastically reducing the detail of the model the exported IFC file was still huge in comparison.

But when i took it into Solibri IFC Optimizer it reduced the file size back to a similar size to the original Vectorworks file.

It is just a shame we couldn't get the IFC project that was exported directly from Vwks to be a smaller size.

Hi Rob,

We are aware of the large size of the IFC output. This is usually related to the current lack of support for IFC "types". We have acknowledged this in our IFC2x3 CV2.0 certification documentation. At this time, IFC type support is optional. In the future, support is planned to be mandatory for certification of certain workflows.

IFC types are a definition-instancing concept for many object types, much like how our native symbols work. This can significantly reduce the size of resulting IFC files when there are many "common" objects. For example, instead of writing all the geometry definition and attributes of Door, at every instance, even thought the Door may be the same in 100 instances, you write the all the aspects of the door once and then 100 simple instance references back to that definition.

We hope to address this in the future.

Be VERY careful using Solibri IFC Optimizer. On the surface, it looks great in reducing the size of the IFC file, but it could actually do a lot of damage during that rewrite and cause many objects to be improperly moved or eliminated. I don't recommend using it until we've done further testing with Solibri, directly.

sorry for reviving.

as solibri ifc optimiser starts to be a recognisable tool here in poland, is the previous opinion still valid, or has the sio performance with vectorworks (and probably not only) been improved in the meantime?

thanks.
