Garry Dreger
After creating a "peak" on a wall, how does one place a window in that part of the wall? And, how does one place more than one window in a dormer? Quote Link to comment
Guest
If you use the 3d reshape tool to create the gable wall end, you simple place a window in the wall the way you would if it were a normal wall. Then you will need to move to the OIP and set the elevation height to a higher number so it's in the gable part of the wall. If you used the "draw gable wall ends" in the roofing element, you will not be able to put windows in these "walls". Quote Link to comment
Guest
Putting more than one window in a dormer would require you to put both windows together as you would like them to display and then make a symbol out of them. Use the single symbol made up of both symbols and insert that in the roof as the dormer. Quote Link to comment
Kristen
If you did use the "draw gable end walls" as part of the roof tool, you can still get windows in -- you just have to ungroup the roof. Then the gable walls become regular, editable, walls. If you don't want the roof itself to be ungrouped, you can duplicate it and ungroup the duplicate. Then turn off the "create gable end walls" check-box in Object Info, and delete the roof faces from the duplicate. It's a little bit of a shortcut. Quote Link to comment
Guest
The problem with ungrouping a roof is ending up with several roof faces. If you want to put a dormer or a skylight in the roof, you cannot place these objects in roof faces in VW. Quote Link to comment
Kristen
That's the neat thing about the shortcut -- if you use a duplicate of your roof to ungroup and take the gable walls from, you can still keep the original as a normal roof object (with it's gable end walls turned off). The only trick is remembering to delete the extra roof faces from the ungrouped duplicate. Sorry I posted twice before... hopefully this one will only go once! Quote Link to comment
Garry Dreger
Thanks, Katie and Kristen for your help. I especially like Kristens input, as it leads to the creation of a triangular shaped wall; not just a gable end. Quote Link to comment
