Wall layer re-assignment option = retain initial top and bottom elevations

When designing more complex split story projects I often need to reassign certain walls to another layer for visualization purposes in plan view, but then I have to re-adjust the walls top and bottom bound/elevation offsets. I'd like if there was an option to "retain initial top and bottom elevations" from the layer it was actually created on.

Would that be too convoluted to program?

If there was no restriction to what levels an object can bound to, then this would not be a problem. Levels should not be bound to a story, but just have a Z value. The stories should be made of two z values, and everything in it is in that story.

Can't you just create a special wall with the correct top and bottom offsets?
