RCrussellUK
I've followed this tutorial http://kbase.vectorworks.net/questions/458/Dormers+and+Skylights yet at the part where the window symbol is supposed to stick to the roof indicated by the change to a blue colour of the surface, my window will not stick or do anything... a little frustrating, maybe I switched something off? Any possible answers greatly appreciated. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
VincentCuclair
Start the insertion at the center point of the roof object..... Quote Link to comment
Guest Wes Gardner
Hey Russell, Try mine...I've taken a skylight out of the Library (Velux) and saved it in the Resource Browser. Then dragging it from the Resource Browser, first hovering over an edge of the roof face makes the roof highlight OR hovering over the center of the roof object makes the roof highlight whereupon I can just drop it on the roof. The default MAY be that it first creates a dormer but that's easy enough to change in the editing dialog. If something isn't working maybe we can get Jim Wilson in to see what's up... RCrussellUK
Thanks for the replies! I tried your test Skylight in my project Wes and that one works, so I'm guessing it's not the model environment, I may not be creating the symbol correctly. Will try some more. Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted November 20, 2013 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted November 20, 2013 The symbol you drop into the roof must be a 3D symbol, not a hybrid symbol or a Window plugin object. Is that the case in your file? Quote Link to comment
RCrussellUK
Was a 3D component. Using the Velux from the library I've managed to produce what I need for now. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. When I've got some extra time I will focus on the 3D symbol/plugin/hybrid creation process so that I can begin to create more custom content. VincentCuclair
Just a little follow up on this after a frustrating 15 mins of fiddling: What the Help files/Tutorials don't clearly explain is that the 'Insert in Walls' setting in the symbol must be checked and when you select the symbol for insertion, the 'Wall Insertion Mode' must be active also, otherwise the roof will not accept the symbol....... Divegod
I've got to the insertion part no problem, however, the skylight goes in on an angle, almost at 90deg and this isn't the angle of the roof so half of the window is sticking out of the roof and facing skywards. Quote Link to comment
Jonathan Pickup
you have to draw the skylight face on. i draw the skylight in front view. Quote Link to comment

Divegod
Another question seeing as I'm the topic of roofs. I've been using an older version of VW for some years now and doing the roof works fine. Now I've upgraded to VW 2016, I'm doing a roof the same way. In the design the roof appears fine, yet in the elevations on a sheet there are lines in the roof from corner to corner and now I have a skylight the lines angle to the skylight then away to the corners. I've tried isolating classes to see if that was the issue but nothing changed and it's only on the one layer. Not sure whats going on here. Any suggestions? Quote Link to comment
Jonathan Pickup
in the viewport settings, Background Render settings, set the angle to something more than 0º. Quote Link to comment
Divegod
I have my background render setting to OpenGL and foreground to Hidden line, the foreground was set to zero. I changed them around to see if this was the issue but it didn't resolve it. Thank you though. Quote Link to comment
Jonathan Pickup
if you have a render option set to Hidden line, change the angle on that one. Quote Link to comment
Divegod
I did that and also changed both foreground and background to Hidden line but it didn't remove the lines. Quote Link to comment
Divegod
Cracked it, although I don't know why. I tried a different angle (5deg) in the background render settings and updated it and it worked. If anyone knows why I'd be interested to know. The roof pitch is 15 deg. Quote Link to comment
