Why do callouts change to 3d plane when pasted in VW2012?

If I copy a callout that is in the screen plane and paste it, the resulting callout winds up in the 3d plane even though the active plane is set to screen.

Can someone out there tell me why this happens and how to fix it?

I'm using VW2012 because I found VW2013 too buggy and unstable to use.

It happens to us as well. Absolutely NO idea why it does this. However, one thing we have found is that when you switch to Layer mode and then paste it in place, it seems to react well. (Or was that Screen mode?).
