Visibility Tool

I have what might be a silly question about the visibility tool. There is a tool mode to make classes / layers visible, assumedly to make an invisible object's class / layer visible. So here's the silly part; if I want to make an invisible class / layer visible, how are you supposed to select the object with the tool if the object is invisible...?

I'd guess it was to deal with greyed rather than invisible class/layer(s)

Either make it visible in the navigation palette if you only want to make that layer/class visible or set up your visibility tool preferences so that when you double-click the visibility tool icon it makes all the classes/layers visible.
