Would adding code to my custom PIO's for doors and windows, to draw 3d component elements, slow down the script execution in 2d views (when you don't see any of the 3d stuff)?

It's not an official answer since my VS skills haven't ranged into that area. This would be a better question for vs_support@nemtschek.net.

Most PIOs I have seen always draw both the 2D and 3D environments in their main loop. So unless you find a way to exclude the 3D code from being executed in a top/plan view, then your additional 3D code will slow down drawing a bit.

I would put in some code and measure the amount of time it take with and without it using GetTickCount().

if you add a 'checkbox' parameter with 'Only_2d' as label or anything and your 3d definition inside the code is within a subroutine called only if your checkbox is false(...)If (POnly_2d = False) Then Subroutine_3d;(...)I think it works
