What is 'save viewport cache' option for?

Check it in your template.

That's all good and fine but that takes time to feed through a system and doesn't cover existing files or other situations where someone's turned it off for instance.

And make sure you turn the option to view the rendering on when editing annotations.

Hehe, yeah thanks for that, except that's why I posted this in the first place. I forget. But it's not my fault, it's the fault of the user interface.

VW needs to find something better for this.

No, it's no longer an option in the Edit Viewport dialog box. Editing Annotations always shows with the rendered cache.

 

However, there IS a Document Preference called "Save Viewport Cache" which saves rendered viewports in the file when you close it, so that you don't have to re-render everything each time you open a file.
