lining up 2nd floor walls with 1st floor walls

Recommended Posts

brent,

Draw your 1st floor plan.

Select plan

Edit > Copy

If you have not done so already, create Design Layer(s) for other floor level(s).

Switch to other floor level, Edit > Paste in Place

Your walls will now be stacked in alignment.

Change Wall style if necessary and edit wall heights.

If using footings, select wall width to represent footing width or create a wall for it.

Use center mode when changing walls so center of footing is aligned with center of foundation wall.

This will save you the offset steps.

NOTE: Remember that if you move walls in your main plan, you will need to relocate the stacked walls in your other layers.

Use Gray/Snap Others or Show/Snap Others. This acts as an overlay so you can verify alignment of Design Layers.

I usually draw just the exterior walls on my main plan then copy and paste to my foundation or crawl space, 2nd floor Design Layer.

Then I complete the floor plans.

Here’s an idea;

make a new layer, call it "curtain wall". Draw the curtain wall on this layer

Make another new layer, called "floor plan 1" draw the program

same for another new layer, floor plan 2. Etc

Make sure all 3 layers are the same scale.

use the layer options "show snap modify others"

turn on/off layers 2 and 3 as necessary

an alternative; if the curtain wall is aligned perfectly (as it would be IRL) across both floors, and drawn on both floors (layers), VW will display it as one wall in elevation, 3d, section views. Provided the wall style is the same on both layers.
