Shim gaps shouldn't generally show in elevation because they generally don't exist. The only time they do exist is when you have windows/doors in fair-faced brickwork.
Ideally we'd have an option to extend the outer wall finishes components past the shim gap (in 3D) to abut the window/door. And we also still be able to dimension easily to the structural opening, even if it's not visible because the lining extends over the shim gap.
