Window/doors: shim gaps shouldn't show in elevation

Christiaan

Question

Shim gaps shouldn't generally show in elevation because they generally don't exist. The only time they do exist is when you have windows/doors in fair-faced brickwork.

Ideally we'd have an option to extend the outer wall finishes components past the shim gap (in 3D) to abut the window/door. And we also still be able to dimension easily to the structural opening, even if it's not visible because the lining extends over the shim gap.

8 years later I would alter this wish and request that we simply have the ability to control the attributes of the shim gap. That way we could make it opaque in model views and we could also dimension directly to it when placing window styles in isolation of walls.

The work around I use these days is to utilise the internal architrave as a way of closing off the shim gap. I make the architrave 0.5 mm deep and the width = jamb + shim gap.

We'd like the ability to control the attributes of Shim Gaps for doors and windows.

In the real world these gaps are often visible (most often in brickwork walls) but filled with material (sealant, foam tap, expanding foam, etc).

So we'd like to be able to control the attributes of this gap so that we can:

  1. Make it opaque, so that you can't see through it in model views, especially elevations.
  2. Make it an object that we can dimension to when placing a window style in isolation of a wall, as we typically do when we draw elevations of windows for window schedules. Because we typically dimension to the structural opening of windows.

Currently we use the Trim feature to workaround this by creating an architrave that's depth = 0.5 mm and width = jamb + shim gap.
