Workgroup Referencing

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I'm trying to make the Workgroup Referencing function useful to my company and I'm having some troubles with it. I can get it to reference, but each drawing that I have referencing the master document seems to think that the layers I am referencing should be put in at different coordinates than what I would like. If I move the objects to where they should be, the next time I reference the master document, it all moves again in the target drawing. If I can not have it at certain coordinates in each drawing, it seems like a waste. Can anybody shed some light on this to me? Thanks,

Jen

I figured that was the case, the problem is that we import an awful lot of documents from AutoCAD from architects and then have to apply our standards to them, so it makes it very tedious to fix it in every document. We're using 9.5.2

Thanks for the input! Jen

If you link the referenced layer to another layer you can move it around to your hearts content in the linked layer. The reference will still update the referenced layer and the linked layer will update from that. I'm getting a headache.

Jen,

When you import the AC files, you should be importing them into a blank document and then copying and pasting to the file you want to work with, or referencing them into the file you want to work with .

The move origin tool is pretty simple to use - you just double click where you want the origin to be. If you have a reference object that you know is 20' from the origin, then you can go from that using a floating datum and the data display bar to get an accurate origin point.

The origin point difference between the two applications is probably one of the more comon issues people have to contend with. In AutoCad, the origin is usually in the upper left hand corner and you draw from there. In VW, you have the ability to draw from whatever coordinate you draw from and the ability to change that.

I think you can simply set the orgion to a common point in all of the files, there are two ways to do this ,

1. under the "Page" menu there is the set origion command, it's pretty simple and is self explaitory.

2. If you have your rulers on you can grab the corner between them in the upper left had corner of the drawing are, click this once and then click on your point, this resets the origion to the new point.

If it were me, I'd make a copy of all the files to try this on first, it should work, but as with everything in life, you never know. The only problem I think you might have is when you try to reference in layers of different scales, it seems like this was problematic but it's been awhile since I tried it so it may have been fixed.

One last solution would be to copy and past all of your data into new files with a common origion and then align the references to the new origion.

You can pretty easily find your origion by turning your rulers on, or sometimes a create a short line segment with the starting point at 0,0 in the drawing area.

Unfortunately no matter what this will probably be a pain in the butt.

Good Luck
