Create a hole in site model using Vectorworks Architect

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how to create a hole in a site model with vertical sides, using Vectorworks Architect tools?

You will never be able to get vertical sides, they are always sloped, but you can get the almost vertical by setting the modifiers as close as possible together.

Thanks DWorks,

I am trying to do some cut outs from the site model for the foundations, what tools do you normally use to form the sides?

I don't seem to be allowed to use the fence tool or retaining wall tool with VW Architect.

The best and easiest way I have found is to 1) Create a Polygon that defines the actual "hole" you wish to excavate; 2) Use the Offset Tool (in Offset and Duplicate mode) to create a very slightly larger polygon (e.g.: 1" larger on each side); 3) Select the first Polygon and then run the command Modify>Objects from Poly's>Site Modifier>Pad. Set the elevation of the new Pad as desired; 4) Select the second Polygon and run the command again, but this time choose "Boundary" (formerly called "Fence") as the Site modifier type; 5) Update the Site Model (make sure that Show Proposed is selected in the 2d and 3d pulldowns in the OIP). Now, when you "build" your foundation walls, place them such that the 1" difference between the Pad and the Fence is hidden in the edge of the wall... It's not perfect but it's very very close.

Thank you very much Peter thats exactly what I was looking to do.

I was trying to follow an old thread which is why i was confused over the fence tool. Boundary seems a much better name, Its all clear now!

You could also:

Draw the pad on the site

AEC>Terrain>Create Boundary from Pad

Enter an offset (greater than zero)

The result is a near vertical excavation.

But you need Landmark for the above
