Why is this file so big?

This file is a 2D shape. The outline is a closed polyline and the black areas are circles and polygons. The DXF file when exported is 16.4Mb.

Why is it so large, when similar files without the oval polygons are only 0.5-1Mb in size?

They is only one layer and only 2 extra classes in addition to the normal 'None' & 'dimension' classes

see how many verticies are in your polyline, and if loads reduce them

I've tried exporting the file without the poly line but it makes no difference. What I have just tried is exporting without the black fills and the file is now 428k.

probably because they are polygons with a lot of vertices?

Based on DWorks suggestion perhaps by just using two polygons. One at the back with a black fill and then one in front with a white fill and with the ellipse shapes clipped from the surface to let the black show through?

Oh I see what you mean now Dieter. In which case my advice wouldn't help.
