Counting Symbols in a Worksheet

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to count how many symbols of a certain type are in a drawing; for example how many S4-36's are in a light plot. From what I've gathered, it seems like the COUNT command is the best way to do this from within a worksheet, but I'm unclear what the exact formula should be. Thanks for any assistance.

Actually. you don't need the count function.

First create a report:

Tools>Create Report

In the dialog, choose:

List all: objects with a record

Listing all objects with record: Lighting Device

Remove all fields, and add "Inst Type" and "Wattage".

Select Summarize all items with the same "Inst Type:

In the resulting worksheet, go to row C2, and simply enter "1". Column C will be your totals.

If you also want to break out instruments with varying wattages, select row 2 and drop the little "Sum" chip from the ribbon to the wattage column header.

Why does this work? When you summarize database rows, all non-matching fields combine. If they are numerical, they add up, so placing a 1 in column C gives you a sum.
